Introducing a Country Boy Cult Hero
This is the story of Buddy Wayne Barefoot, a country boy with a dream as big as all outdoors.
I introduced him in 1999 at CollegeClub.com, then I transferred him to Go.com the next year as part of a much larger project called Baldridge Island. He has been a standalone character since 2003 on Webspawner. Now I have moved him to Freeservers. With all due respect to the other previous sites, this is much easier to use and update than the locations I have used previously. I have even bought a domain name so that he is easier to find and promote than ever!
In 2007, I brought my character to a new level by writing and publishing a book called The Buddy Wayne Chronicles (see below). Hopefully, this will bring my character to a whole new audience. This book will appeal to NASCAR fans, country music fans, and people who just long for the "good old days," when life was simpler and traditional values were more appreciated.
ABOUT MY CHARACTER
Buddy Wayne Barefoot, Jr. was born in Dunn, NC, about halfway between Raleigh and Fayetteville. He grew up in Benson, which is about six miles away. He comes from a broken family: his father and mother separated when B.W. was very young, largely as a result of a dispute over the circumstances of his birth. B.W.'s mother, Brenda, drank heavily during pregnancy, leaving Buddy with several birth defects. As a child, he discovered that he had gifts in both sports and entertainment. He starred in high school basketball as a point guard, had become a go-kart racer, and had started to write and sing simple songs on his guitar. All of this was encouraged by a great-uncle, Alonzo Barefoot, who lived in Newton Grove (another nearby town) and became Buddy's "father figure."
In the late 1990s, B.W. moved to Baldridge Island, a mythical place on the intersection of the Equator and the Prime Meridian where he thrived in both the entertainment and sports worlds. On a short-track racing circuit, he won numerous titles and in the music world, despite being a country boy in the midst of a big-city environment, he became one of its biggest stars. Eager to prove himself in America, Buddy Wayne packed up and returned to his former country.
In 2003, Buddy Wayne took on his biggest challenge: the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. His career was nothing short of astonishing, as he won a higher percentage of races than any other driver in the series' history and became the sixth driver to win at least three season championships. But his career was as dramatic as it was spectacular: his brother and crew chief, Bobby Ray, once left him due to his daughter's illness, he had to have heart surgery following one of his championship seasons and missed the season-ending banquet, and he was fined more money and suffered the greatest points penalty in NASCAR history due to portrayals of some drivers and officials in the movie Rebel.
But Rebel, a movie based on his own script about a counterterrorist superhero, was the year's biggest blockbuster and the character quickly joined the pantheon of memorable world-savers along with Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man. Just before that, "Bluebird," the autobiographical song about his daring escape from the clutches of his father, who did not want him to move to Baldridge Island due to paranoia about the place, spent more time as the Billboard number-one pop song than any other.
The success of Rebel led to a spin-off television network of the same name. It was a channel that was family-friendly and took off from the same themes that made Rebel so successful. This also leads to the events that I write about in my book.
ABOUT MY BOOK
One day, Buddy Wayne, who is increasingly dissatisfied with his life in NASCAR racing, flies back from a NASCAR race when an accident causes him to fly into a cloud. On the cloud is Idealia, a Utopian land that resembles the set of his television variety show, My Ideal World. Once he is there, Buddy Wayne lives a new life of adventure and intrigue as he deals with a different way of life, but one in which he is curious. He uses his platform to advocate a return to the traditional values for all the residents.
One day, a friend of his, Ryan Bowling, invites him to compete on the land's short track in a race involving Legends cars. He accepts the invitation, but faces a new distraction; his first cousin, Bunky Crabtree, is in secret negotiations to buy Idealia and tear down the farmland and reduce the open space, and build condominiums, a hotel, and a casino.
In addition, Brittany Spears, the near-namesake of the pop diva, wins B.W.'s heart - while B.W. is still married to his childhood sweetheart. A loophole paves the way for a possible marriage, but he has to keep it secret due to family disdain (in the vein of Romeo and Juliet).
Can Buddy Wayne solve these dilemmas, and win the big race? Buy the book and find out!

What's NEW!
This section features news about my book, my site, and other personal and professional projects once they become available. I will also link to media reports if they occur.
THIS IS THE SITE'S ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY! Thanks to everyone who has bought my book and visited this website. One of the major changes in the past year is that I have decided to spend most of my time editing my blog. I have found this easier and more convenient for me to edit. I still change the pages of the main site on occasion, however. The blog also contains some special content, including how various people and events would react to B.W.'s legacy, if he had one. (See below for the link.)
My blog is now open! Learn more about my life and about my character's take on current events.
UPDATES ON REAL PEOPLE WITH THE BAREFOOT LAST NAME:
- Southern Mississippi punter Britt Barefoot married Hollie Pulliam, first cousin of former boy-band singer Lance Bass, on January 12. Britt will be a redshirt senior at Southern Miss this coming season. Personally, I'm still waiting for him to take his kicking shoes off! (It worked for Tony Franklin and Rich Karlis many years ago, why not for a Barefoot?)
- Doug Barefoot has returned to the track for the Limited Late Model season at Southern National Raceway Park, still in search of his first victory. Click here to check out his progress this season.
- Brian Barefoot has just finished his 15th season of editing Survivor on CBS. This year, he was promoted to supervising editor. Congratulations!
- Blogger Darren Barefoot has moved from Canada to Malta. Wonder why...
